How Do You Rebuild Trust in a Marriage / Relationship?
I have a little formula for rebuilding trust that I give to couples in need. It goes like this:
Change / Time
That is, trust is like a glass jar in that it is much easier to break than to put it back together. Trust not only takes time and hard work to rebuild, but it is also something that the other person earns by making the appropriate changes over a period of time.
Now, let me say a few things in relation to this. First of all, many couples are more than willing to make a few changes, but one of the things that we really dislike as human beings is waiting. In other words, I find many that do not mind the numerator of my equation (that is, change), but they get a little caught up on the denominator (that is, time).
Relationships are not restored overnight, and, at this time, it is important to, as Jesus said, "count the cost" and be sure that you are willing to not only change, but have the patience and the determination to wait on God and one another.
Secondly, as your spouse makes the appropriate changes, you must be willing to take a little risk in the relationship. In other words, if you are going to progress in the relationship, then you are going to have to take the risk of trusting them once again. Now, I say risk because there will never be a 100% guarantee that your spouse will never hurt you again, but, listen very closely, there is also no such thing as a 100% guarantee that a new husband or a new wife will never hurt you again either.
